Join the Library of NC’s Government and Heritage Library and the State Archives of NC for a Community Scanning Day! Bring your family photographs, letters, and historical documents to be digitized for free with assistance from library and archives staff. This is a great opportunity to preserve your family history and contribute to North Carolina’s shared heritage, and all participants will go home with a free USB drive containing scanned family records.

Advance registration is required to reserve a 15-minute appointment slot between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Each participant may bring up to 5 items per appointment, and items must be no larger than standard letter size (8.5" x 11"). During the appointment, our team will scan your materials for you and provide guidance on caring for your originals and digital files, and you’ll also learn about resources for genealogy and local history research. Please note that bound or oversized materials cannot be scanned at these digitization stations. If you have bound or larger items, GHL has a self-service BookScanner capable of scanning bound materials and large items, such as scrapbooks and family bibles. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required to reserve a 15-minute appointment at a digitization station; walk-ins are welcome to use the Government and Heritage Library’s self-service BookScanner.
