Position Description: The Library Director provides executive leadership for a county‑wide public library system, creating a welcoming, inclusive environment that delivers excellent customer service and positive user experiences. This role plans, organizes, and directs all administrative, technical, and public service operations across seven departments and ten branches, ensuring services meet community needs. 

The Director prepares and oversees the annual departmental budget; manages county, state, federal, grant, and donated funds; and ensures accurate financial and statistical reporting. Responsibilities include personnel management, policy and service planning, collection development oversight, and facilities management. Serving as a key liaison to the Library Board of Trustees, County officials, community partners, and the public, the Director promotes the Library through advocacy, marketing, and civic engagement while mentoring leaders and staff and supporting long‑term strategic planning.

 

Qualifications: Requires a Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA‑accredited institution, with coursework meeting all requirements for North Carolina Public Librarian Certification. Ten (10) years of progressively responsible public library experience required, including five (5) years in supervisory and administrative roles. Must have strong knowledge of modern public library operations, local government functions, and information resources. Demonstrated ability to lead a library system, communicate effectively, build productive relationships, and engage diverse communities. Must meet physical job requirements, operate office and computer equipment, and work evenings and weekends as needed.

 

Salary: $109,599.98 - $180,800.05 Annually
