The State Library of North Carolina (now the Library of North Carolina) is seeking a well-rounded Reference Services Supervisor to join our team! This position serves as the Reference Services Unit Supervisor, a primary reference librarian and public services liaison. This position oversees the management of access services functions including library card registration, circulation, patron records management, interlibrary loan, and tracking and reporting in-house use statistics. This position also oversees the management of reference and research services functions including training professional and paraprofessional staff for reference desk and chat reference service and scheduling service desk shifts. This position has the potential for hybrid work with a minimum of four days per week onsite.
Key Responsibilities
- Directly supervising unit staff, including two professional librarians and two paraprofessionals.
- Coordinating onsite and virtual reference desk staffing schedules and protocols.
- Overseeing and managing the GHL reading room, reference and research services, circulation and ILL, patron database and library card applications, and chat reference service and training.
- Providing expert reference and research assistance and training to professional colleagues, state government employees, and public researchers in-person and online. Actively participating in the library’s reference desk rotation weekly and approximately one Saturday per month.
- Leading the library’s cross-functional Reference Team, responsible for educating GHL staff on reference service to the public, including topical instruction for potential reference questions; setting annual program goals and educational activities/presentations; and evaluating program outcomes/impact.
- Coordinating with the Outreach Librarian and the Education & Instruction Librarian to present GHL’s public outreach and educational programs, including State Library tours.
- Coordinating with the SLNC communications team to create print and online informational, promotional, and service awareness materials and videos for general and targeted audiences.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:
- Demonstrated experience supervising professional and/or paraprofessional staff.
- Demonstrated experience managing public services in an academic, public, and/or special library.
- Demonstrated experience developing and/or updating instruction and training materials.
- Demonstrated experience applying intellectual property rights and/or federal copyright law relative to libraries/interlibrary loan.
- Demonstrated experience supporting researchers in one of the following disciplines: North Carolina history, government, and/or family history.
SALARY
Recruitment Range: $52,592-$86,026
